OIL PAINTING DEMO

After creating a sketch, I use a grid to enlarge it and transfer it to a canvas with charcoal pencil. I then begin filling in a background wash in acrylic paint, which will quickly cover all the white canvas and dry, allowing me to go to the next step.

In this stage, the entire canvas has been covered with an thin layer of acrylic colors. I then cover the lion with a second layer, this time using oil paint.

I add a second layer to the background, in oil paint. This is a big canvas, 3' x 4', so I use several large brushes and a lot of paint.

I wait a few days for the paint to dry, then give the lion more detail with another layer of oils. The final character is beginning to appear, but the painting isn't finished yet...

After another couple days of drying time, I add the last touches to the painting. Deep darks and bright highlights add depth and sparkle, and bring the lion to life.
